A kindergarten class in Greene County got a special treat Wednesday, all the way from Iraq. Technology brought them face to face with troops in the war zone.
Wednesday was the first time Miss Woods’ kindergartner class at Greene County Primary got to see and talk to Army Sergeant Bryan Walker, who is from Charlottesville. It was another chapter in a relationship that started with a simple Valentine’s Day gift.
Walker and a few other troops Skyped with the class for about 45 minutes. It was a meeting that has been a long time in the making. Walker sent the class a signed American flag for Valentine’s Day. They sent 42 boxes of goodies to his unit last month.
Wednesday, they thanked one another and he talked to them about life in Iraq, and how much the gifts meant to him and his fellow troops.
“They said, ‘We appreciated the flag, and we have a surprise for you,’” recalled Walker. “We had no idea, nor space, that they were gonna send so many gifts.”
“This is a unique experience for the children,” said Greene County Primary Principal Jason Davis. “A unique situation where they were able to not only understand the ideas and the concept of citizenship that we try to teach them, but also it builds a sense of community.”
Walker says this was his first time Skyping and that he and the troops that were on the call with him did not want to get off because it was like being home. Miss Woods and her class plan to send more boxes to Walker’s unit. He did say that they need mouth guards, like the ones boxers wear.
